There have been speculations about this for a while now, but on October 21st Minecraft released a statement that confirms the big chance that is coming.
Minecraft announced in its newsletter that this change will open a new path to a better future, on which we will expand later. For this reason, Minecraft has decided that in the future all players of their games will be needing a Microsoft account including Minecraft Java Edition.
Minecraft in its newsletter compares this change to moving into a new house, it will be a bit of a hassle to move in, but once you have moved in you will be happy with the extra space. Minecraft expands on this “extra space” by naming the benefits of moving to a Microsoft account:
- Improved security with the option of two-factor authentication.
- Al you PC Minecraft games will be in one place, for now, these games are Minecraft and Minecraft dungeons, but Minecraft implies that in the future there will be more games.
- Parental control has been improved in order to offer children a more safe environment.
- An option has been added to block chat and invitations.
Taking all this into account, you can conclude that Minecraft's real reason for this big migration project is getting all players into one environment where they have access to all their games.
All nice and well, but what do you have to do with this? Minecraft tells us that migrating from a Mojang account to a Microsoft account will be mandatory for all players. This means that if you don’t transfer your Mojang account to a Microsoft account you will no longer be able to play Minecraft. Minecraft sets us at ease by telling us that they will give us various e-mails and explanation video’s on how to migrate your account. At WitherNode we will also keep an eye on this and inform you accordingly.
Minecraft emphasizes that after the migration that all java features will still be there, you will still be able to use mods and skins, and you will keep your existing skins and Minecraft name. And most importantly you will still be able to play on your favorite WitherNoder server.
As compensation for all the hassle, Minecraft will distribute capes to everyone that migrates their account. Minecraft also implies that this might be multiple capes and maybe there will be a function to show off multiple outfits, like a wardrobe function maybe?
Minecraft tells us that the migration will start in early 2021, and new players will have to use a Microsoft account starting this fall. The migration will be in batches, or in other words, not all accounts will be transferred at once, but in the end, all the accounts will be transferred. Minecraft emphasizes that the transfer will be made as easy as possible, the only important thing that the players will have to do is pay attention to their inbox in early 2021.
When there is more information about this migration such as specific dates we from WitherNode will inform you about this, cause you want to keep playing on your WitherNode server, don't you?
